About This Guide

We focused purely on cost performance for this list. Working daily in Shinjuku, I have personally visited these local spots to ensure they offer high-quality meals at local prices.

Because these are local spots, some may lack English menus; however, they are the ideal choice for long-term travelers looking to avoid places with "tourist prices" while enjoying great food.

Since these local spots are hidden gems, having a reliable internet connection for translation and navigation is highly recommended.

For those staying in Tokyo for an extended period, we recommend considering Sakura Mobile. Our main office is in Shinjuku, so we can provide in-person support if you ever encounter any connectivity issues during your stay.

5 Best Lunch in Shinjuku

Yakitori Haretsubame (焼鳥 ハレツバメ)

Yakitori Haretsubame

While Yakitori Haretsubame operates as an Izakaya at night, they also serve excellent lunch sets during the day. They have a few restaurants across Shinjuku, but I usually go to the one at the Shinjuku East Exit.

The best part is that every lunch set comes with free refills of rice, miso soup, pickles, and drinks. I highly recommend the Dashimaki Tamago and Chicken Soup Set Meal (1,250 yen). Dashimaki Tamago is a light and fluffy Japanese rolled omelet made with savory dashi stock, and the chicken soup is packed with savory umami.

The menu is available in English, and you can easily order via QR code on your phone. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to take off your shoes before entering the seating area!

Hakata Rame Kazu (博多らーめん 和)

While Ichiran is a popular choice, Hakata Ramen Kazu is a hidden gem for anyone seeking the best cost performance. Their cheapest bowl of authentic tonkotsu ramen is only 400 yen, which remarkably includes one extra free noodle (Kaedama).

I usually order the Half-Fried Rice Set for 700 yen, which comes with a standard bowl of ramen and a small side of fried rice—finding a filling meal for under 1,000 yen in Shinjuku is nearly impossible elsewhere.

You’ll need to buy a ticket from the vending machine to order. But be aware that it’s Japanese-only with very few photos, so you'll need to choose carefully.

  • Restaurant Name:Hakata Ramen Kazu
  • Hours:7:00 AM - 11:30 PM
  • Budget:¥500 - ¥1,000

Gifuya (岐阜屋)

Gifuya is a local Chinese restaurant located in the nostalgic Omoide Yokocho. It’s certainly not fancy, but the food is genuinely delicious. While everything on the menu is great, my personal favorite is the Gyoza (dumplings). You can easily get a full, satisfying meal here for around 1,000 yen.

The menu is available in English, but keep in mind that there are no photos. Also, please note that they only accept cash. I saw a warning saying that photography is strictly prohibited inside, so be sure to look out for it to avoid any trouble.

  • Restaurant Name:Gifuya
  • Hours:9:00 AM - 1:00 AM
  • Budget:¥1,000 - ¥1,500
  • Website:https://gifuya.com/

Oedo (大江戸)

If you’re looking for a sushi spot that balances quality and price, Oedo is an excellent choice. They have a few different shops in Tokyo, but I often go to the Shinjuku West Exit shop since it’s close to our office.

The seafood is fresh and sliced into thick, generous portions. It’s a great place to enjoy delicious sushi at a very reasonable price.

You can simply grab from the rotating conveyor belt, or you can order directly from the chef. It’s a fast, convenient, and high-quality dining experience right in the heart of Shinjuku.

  • Restaurant Name:Oedo Shinjuku Nishiguchi Ten
  • Hours:11:30 AM - 22:00 PM
  • Budget:¥1,000 - ¥2,000
  • Website:https://www.ooedo.co.jp/

Coffee Seibu (珈琲西武)

Coffee Seibu

If you're looking for a place to enjoy a relaxing lunch, Coffee Seibu is my top recommendation. Stepping inside feels like traveling back to 1980s Japan, with its nostalgic retro atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to experience a classic Japanese coffee shop (known as a Kissaten).

My personal favorite is the Omurice Set, which comes with a salad and a drink. The portion is quite big, but the price is only 1,300yen. The omelet is served on top of the rice—when you cut it open, the creamy egg spreads out, making it look as good as it tastes.

Weekdays are generally quiet, and it’s easy to get a seat, but you might find a line on weekends.

  • Restaurant Name:Coffee Seibu Nishishinjukuten
  • Hours:11:00 AM - 21:30 PM
  • Budget:¥1,000 - ¥2,000
  • Website:N/A
