Have you ever felt lost while traveling, waiting forever for the map or search result to load? Your carrier or data plans become even more important when you're in another country. It is important to know what your phone can do while traveling!
Is Xfinity available in Japan?
Short answer: Yes, Xfinity Mobile works in Japan. If you are part of the Mobile Select, Mobile Plus, or Premium Unlimited plans, international talk, text, and data are available with no need for separate travel passes. Check out your own plan through Xfinity Sign-in to see if your network is eligible.
Does Xfinity Mobile Work in Japan?
If you're on a Mobile Plus, Mobile Select, or a Premium Unlimited plan, there is no need to do anything additional. International roaming is already included in your plan.
| Global Travel Pass | Included International Roaming | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $10 per day | No extra cost |
| Data Limit | 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour pass | 10 GB of high-speed data per billing cycle |
| What happens after the limit? | Data slows to 3 Mbps until the next day | Speeds are included to 14 Mbps for the remainder of the bill cycle |
| Calls & Texts | Unlimited talk and text back to the US and within Japan included | |
| Who it's for | Customers on By the Gig or an older Unlimited Plan | Customers on Mobile Plus, Mobile Select, or Premium Unlimited |
Check your plan name in the Xfinity app to check which columns apply to you!
Xfinity's international roaming plan covers over 215 destinations, including Japan. It gives you unlimited international data, including 10 GB at high speeds every month. As stated in the chart, after using 10 GB, your data slows down to 14 Mbps for the rest of your billing cycle.
A 14 Mbps connection gives you basic to moderate internet speeds. You can handle everyday activities like browsing the web, sending messages, and watching videos. However, the connection may feel slow if multiple devices share the internet at the same time.

Is Xfinity accessible everywhere in Japan?
Xfinity works in most of Japan, but coverage is not guaranteed everywhere. Since Xfinity does not have its own network in Japan, your phone connects to a Japanese partner network while roaming. Signals can be weak or unavailable, especially in remote areas, such as mountains, rural towns, and some islands. Even when you have a signal, roaming data can feel slower than a local Japanese connection.
What is a Gig Plan: Global Travel Pass and Pay-As-You-Go?
Even if you're not on Mobile Select or Mobile Plus, there are still ways to use Xfinity internationally! However, older plans may have additional restrictions.
The Gig Plan includes a set amount of cellular data per month. You can use this plan internationally, but your domestic data does not cover foreign data use, meaning you must pay an extra daily fee or pay per megabyte.
- Global Travel Pass: By adding this pass that is for $10 per day per line, this pass gives high-speed data in Japan as well! You only get charged on days when you actually use data abroad.
- Pay As You Go: You can pay for each megabyte (MB) of data used on your trip. The rate is $0.30 per MB of data. This is the default international data option, unless it is already included in your plan or add the Global Travel Pass.
Be careful with this method, since there might be surprise charges while you use too much data without realizing it.
What to Watch Out For
Even though you have the Mobile Plus or Mobile Select, the “unlimited data” does have some restrictions. Although you have access to unlimited data, that does not mean you will have unlimited unlimited high-speed data. After using 10 GB, your speeds will be reduced.
Limitations with Xfinity Mobile
One of the key limitations is how much high-speed data you can get in Japan. If you are part of the newer plans, you are granted “unlimited international data,” but that doesn’t mean it has unlimited full-speed data.
The first 10 GB per billing cycle will have high-speed data. However, after that 10 GB, the data will continue to work, but speeds are up to 14 Mbps.
Your international data doesn’t count against the domestic 50 GB premium-data threshold on Mobile Select.
In general, if you are part of the newer plan, it seems generous. However, if you have an older/regular Unlimited or use By the Gig plan, the price will start getting expensive. The Global Travel Pass will be $10/day and will be added each day.
What does your Cost Really Look Like?
Say you are on a 14-day trip on the Global Travel Pass. Since the daily rate is $10 per day, if you use data every single day, in 14 days it would be $140 per line. If you travel in groups, it means that you have to multiply $140 per line being used.

Roaming Data?
If you are using your original carrier roaming data, you might get lower network priority, meaning you won't have high-speed data. When this happens, you might face the struggles of taking a long time to load your map or getting your search results. A local SIM or eSIM for Japan is much better option for reliable connection.

Get Local Data through Sakura Mobile
Using your home carrier, Xfinity, might seem convenient, but its international roaming does not provide unlimited high-speed data. This can lead to unexpected roaming charges to quietly creep up on your bill. Sakura Mobile is one of the carriers in Japan that provides full English support with very reasonable prices.
Sakura Mobile connects directly to major Japanese networks –NTT docomo and au. This gives travelers access to local network coverage instead of relying on Xfinity’s international roaming service.
Sakura Mobile Travel plans are data only, so you can keep your Xfinity line for calls and texts while using Sakura Mobile for mobile data. You can also use apps like LINE, WhatsApp, and FaceTime for calls and messages over your Sakura Mobile data connection.
- NTT docomo - 5G
- au – 5G
Why choose Sakura Mobile over Roaming

- What is the best alternative for international roaming in Japan?
Instead of relying on your domestic carrier while traveling, it is better to use Japanese local tourist eSIMs and Pocket WiFi providers, like Sakura Mobile, for heavy data users.
- Is my Xfinity Mobile phone compatible with Sakura Mobile eSIM/SIM card?
Yes, if your Xfinity Mobile phone is carrier-unlocked to accept a Sakura Mobile physical SIM or compatible with dual SIM. If your phone is carrier-locked to Xfinity, you won't be able to use direct local SIM, but you will be able to use a Sakura Mobile Pocket WiFi rental device.
- Can I keep my Xfinity phone number active while using Sakura Mobile eSIM/SIMs?
Yes, if your phone supports dual SIM and is unlocked. Like Sakura eSIM, the secondary line works for Cellular Data while keeping your primary line active.
- Will using Sakura Mobile affect my Xfinity billing or monthly plan?
No. Sakura Mobile's tourist eSIM, physical SIM, or Pocket WiFi is a one-time purchase. It is not connected to your Xfinity account.
- Will my phone's eSIM be compatible with Sakura Mobile?
Check if your phone is carrier-unlocked and if it is capable of dual-SIM. Also, check if it can receive Japanese network, such as docomo or au. If yes, then your phone should be compatible! If not unlocked or compatible, the best alternative is to rent Sakura Mobile Pocket WiFi. If you are not sure, Sakura Mobile offers a compatibility checker to investigate your own phone model.
- How long does the battery last on a single charge for the Pocket WiFi?
Most Sakura Mobile's Pocket WiFi lasts up to 20 hours of continuous active use.
