Fukuoka Airport (FUK) Arrival Guide 2026

Published on 2026-09-29 by Sakura Mobile

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is the main gateway to Kyushu—and if you're flying in from another country, you'll land at the International Terminal. This guide covers your first hour on the ground: getting online, getting an IC card, and getting into the city.

Flying into a different city? Check out our guides to Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, or Kansai Airport (KIX) instead.

TL;DR

  • Fukuoka Airport's International Terminal handles all international arrivals—duty-free, currency exchange, rental cars, and SIM/WiFi pickup all here.
  • Complete Visit Japan Web before you fly to speed up immigration and customs.
  • Get an IC card (nimoca, or use Suica/PASMO) right after landing—most foreign Android phones can't use the mobile version, so a physical card is the easier route.
  • A free shuttle bus connects to the Domestic Terminal if you have an onward domestic flight.
  • Sakura Mobile's SIM, eSIM, and Pocket WiFi counter is in the International Terminal, ready for pickup the moment you land.

Before You Land: Visit Japan Web

Visit Japan Web is a free government website. It lets you send your immigration and customs information ahead of time. In return, you get a QR code that can speed up your arrival.

Here's how it works:

  • Go to https://www.vjw.digital.go.jp and create an account.
  • Enter your passport details, flight information, and where you're staying in Japan.
  • Fill out both the immigration and customs sections. Since 2024, these combine into one QR code.
  • Save your QR code before you land—a screenshot works fine.
  • At Fukuoka Airport, scan your QR code and passport at the automated kiosk in the arrival area.

Is it required? No. Paper arrival cards are still handed out on the plane and accepted at FUK. But registering ahead is free, takes about 10-15 minutes, and can save you time in a busy arrival line.

Fukuoka Airport WiFi

Three smartphone screens showing steps to connect to free airport WiFi and complete authentication.

Is Fukuoka Airport WiFi free? Yes. Connect to one of these networks:

  • AirportFreeWiFi-2.4G
  • AirportFreeWiFi-5.0G

Steps to connect:

  • Turn on WiFi in your device settings.
  • Choose one of the networks above.
  • A connection screen will pop up. Accept the terms of service.
  • You're online—no sign-up needed.

One thing to know: free airport WiFi is fine for a quick check-in message or a map check. It's not built for a full day of navigation, translation apps, or ride-hailing once you leave the terminal. Most travelers use a rented SIM card, eSIM, or Pocket WiFi—more on that below.

Fukuoka Airport IC Cards: nimoca, Suica & PASMO

An illustration of a nimoca IC transit card with a yen symbol and reload arrows.

One of the first practical things to sort out after landing is how you'll pay for trains, buses, and convenience stores. A rechargeable IC card is the easiest way to do this.

You can buy a nimoca card at ticket machines in the International Terminal, or use a Suica or PASMO card if you already have one from another trip. All three work interchangeably at stations, buses, and shops across Japan.

Can I use Suica on my phone at Fukuoka Airport?

If you have an iPhone, yes—you can add Suica directly to your Apple Wallet. Most foreign Android phones can't do this, since mobile IC cards need a Japan-market device with Osaifu-Keitai support. If you're on Android, a physical nimoca or Suica card is the simpler choice—and you don't lose any functionality by using one.

SIM, eSIM & Pocket WiFi in Fukuoka

Kyushu is well covered by Japan's major carriers, though coverage can be less consistent in more rural parts of the island. Either way, it's worth getting reliable data set up before you leave the airport.

This is where you'll be after clearing immigration. Here's what's on each floor:

  • 1F: Arrivals, currency exchange, information counter, rental car counters (the only terminal with rental cars), Bus Lounge
  • 2F: Immigration
  • 3F: Departures, bag drop, paid lounges, security
  • 4F: Observation deck

Currency exchange is available on 1F and 3F. ATMs are located throughout the terminal, including several that accept foreign credit cards.

Domestic Terminal

If you have a connecting domestic flight, or want a wider choice of food, the Domestic Terminal is a free shuttle bus ride away (7-9 minutes). It's directly connected to the Fukuoka City subway and has a broader dining selection, including the popular Ramen Runway (3F) for Hakata tonkotsu ramen.

Getting Between Terminals

Passengers with suitcases approach a purple shuttle bus outside the Fukuoka Airport terminal.

A free shuttle bus connects the Domestic and International terminals. Look for the bus stop in the 1st floor of either terminal.

The ride takes about 10-15 minutes. During peak hours (7 AM-6 PM), buses run every 6-7 minutes, so even if you miss one, another arrives soon.

Tip: The subway doesn't connect directly to the International Terminal. To get there, you can either:

  1. Take the Nishitetsu Bus from Hakata Station straight to the International Terminal, or
  2. Take the subway to the Domestic Terminal, then transfer to the free shuttle bus.

Luggage Storage & Delivery

Don't want to carry your bags around Fukuoka? You don't have to. Same-day delivery to your hotel is available right from the airport, along with coin lockers if you just need short-term storage.

Prices are approximate and may change. Always confirm current fares at the bus counter or station ticket machines before you travel.

  • Bus: Buy tickets at the HEARTS Travel Desk or Nishitetsu Bus counter (both terminals, 1F).
  • Rental cars: Counters are on 1F of the International Terminal only—there are none in the Domestic Terminal.

Tip for late-night or early morning flights: the subway runs roughly from 5:45 AM to midnight, and the inter-terminal shuttle runs about 6:00 AM to 11:20 PM. If you land outside those hours, a taxi is your most reliable option into the city.

Kyushu Rail & Bus Passes

If you're planning to explore beyond Fukuoka City, a regional pass can save you money:

  • SUNQ Pass: Unlimited rides on highway and local buses across Kyushu. Buy online, through a travel agency, or at bus operator offices.
  • JR Kyushu Rail Pass: Unlimited rides on local trains, limited express trains, and some Shinkansen routes within Kyushu. Pick up passes bought online or through a travel agency at the JR Kyushu Rail Exchange counter (International Terminal, 1F)—bring your passport.
  • Fukuoka City Subway 1-Day Pass: Unlimited subway rides for one day. Pays for itself after just three trips. Available at subway ticket machines or pre-purchase online through travel agencies and receive an online voucher to exchange.

Where to Shop & Eat

Travelers shopping for snacks inside a Lawson convenience store at Fukuoka Airport

If you've just landed, you'll be on the landside (1F) of the International Terminal, before security. Dining options here are limited to four spots: Yoshinoya (beef bowls and Japanese fast food), Tully's Coffee, Costa Coffee, and Royal Cafeteria Miyabi (Japanese cafeteria-style meals).

For shopping, you'll find Gacha World (capsule toy machines), Lawson (convenience store), TOKO plus (travel items and services), and JAL PLAZA (food and souvenirs). There's also a limited-time shop, Wafood Airport, currently open on 1F. However, it is a temporary store, so it may no longer be operating by the time you visit Japan. There's no duty-free shopping on this side—that's past security, on 3F, and only accessible if you're checking in for a later flight.

For more variety, it's worth taking the free shuttle over to the Domestic Terminal. Ramen Runway (3F) is one of Fukuoka's best-known airport dining spots, along with Hakata Ikkousha's famous tonkotsu ramen and Hakata Motsunabe Ooyama's tripe hotspot.

Heads up before you shop

Starting November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free shopping changes. You'll pay full price in-store, then claim a refund at the airport after a customs check, instead of an instant discount at checkout.
